Rep. Steel Hosts U.S. Coast Guard, Local Leaders for Update on Orange County Oil Spill

October 3, 2021

Huntington Beach, CA - This afternoon Rep. Michelle Steel (CA-48) invited representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard and local community leaders for a briefing and update on the oil spill affecting the coastline. Joined by the U.S. Coast Guard’s Lieutenant Commander Jeannie Shaye, Rep. Steel shared an update from her aerial tour of the damage this morning and the Major Disaster Declaration request that she sent to President Biden this morning.

“This oil spill is devastating for our community and I am working hard to get Orange County the resources we need to clean up and keep our coastline safe. I’m thankful to the Coast Guard and local leaders who have been working around the clock to contain the spill. We are working together to keep our community safe,” said Rep. Steel.

A website for volunteers interested in helping with cleanup will be live today, and many organizations have been working nonstop to protect local wildlife.

Earlier today Rep. Steel sent a letter to President Biden requesting a Major Disaster Declaration for Orange County following the spill. A Major Disaster Declaration makes additional federal assistance available for state and local agencies working to respond to a natural disaster as well as individuals and households impacted.
