Steel Condemns Antisemitism at Berkley Law

October 3, 2022

Rep. Michelle Steel (R-CA) released the below statement in response to nine student groups at the University of California, Berkeley Law School adopting antisemitic policies that would ban speakers who have expressed pro-Israel positions.

"Discrimination of any kind has no place in our society,” said Rep. Steel. “This antisemitic movement at Berkeley is deeply troubling and hurtful. Our colleges and universities should be a place of learning and free thought, not discrimination. I'm a proud supporter of Israel, our greatest ally in the Middle East, and will continue to be a voice in Congress for our Jewish friends and neighbors."

Rep. Steel has consistently supported the Jewish community and pro-Israel policies in Congress by:

  • Supporting fully funding security assistance to Israel
  • Speaking out against ongoing attacks by Hamas
  • Calling for sanctions against backers of Hamas
  • Co-sponsoring the Preventing Anti-Semitic Hate Crimes Act, which recognizes that Jews are the target of the majority of hate-crimes based on religion and requires expedited review of antisemitic hate crimes and expands education on antisemitic hate
  • Co-sponsoring the Israel Anti-Boycott Act, to Combat the BDS Movement and anti-Israel boycotts
  • Supporting last year’s National Defense Authorization Act, which included $3.3 billion for Israel’s defense security through 2028, and 500 million for missile defense systems
